Groundhog

These are Mortimer and Lacy.  Mortimer was donated to CLAWS by a wonderful breeder, and is such a ham!  Lacy, was rescued by a wonderful man who heard her screaming as another man was shooting and trying to beat her to death with the butt of a gun.  She is fine living in captivity, but is totally blind and has brain damage.  She will have a home here at CLAWS for the duration of her life!

Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks and whistlepigs.  These playful animals never go more than 50 feet from their homes.  They are closely related to the prairie dog, and all ground squirrels, a subspecies known as marmots.

Mortimer and Lacy are permanent members of the CLAWS family and in 2009, Mortimer will play Sir Walter Wally in Raleigh as is tradition there for Groundhog Day.

As much as gardeners hate groundhogs, they are very misunderstood.  Groundhogs do not care much for fruit or plants still growing, they prefer to eat what falls to the ground and is unwanted anyway.
